SMS As A Social And Business Networking Tool

Short Messaging Service (also known as SMS or Text Messaging) has edged its way into the lives of millions of people around the world as a very useful tool for social and business networking. Indeed, the ubiquitous SMS is today one of the most effective means of modern communication.

Affordable & Cost-effective
SMS is very cost effective as it is very cheap on most phone networks in Africa. In some western countries like UK, France and Germany, SMS is so cheap that a certain number of messages is free for each subscriber every month.

A savvy 'texter' can make his/point within the 160 characters allowed per message. Note however that latest mobile phones now allow up to 580 characters to be sent per message, but the sender would be billed for 3 messages if the 580 characters is reached. A text message in some cases, is far cheaper when compared to the cost of making an international call.

Charges for each message is usually the same irrespective of the destination. Thus, a text message to South Africa or Egypt from Ghana for example, would cost the same.

In Africa, text messages can cost between USD 0.07 and USD 0.11 depending on a cellular network's tariff and a subscribers plan (prepaid or post-paid).

The cost-effectiveness of text messaging is what has made it very popular amongst the youth all over the world.

...to be continued.

"1 trillion text messages were sent globally in 2005. This is expected to grow to 2.5 trillion by 2008 now that text messaging is one of the world’s most popular forms of communication. This presents mobile network operators with a significant opportunity to introduce new services and to continue to grow traffic and revenues. But the network architecture was designed in the early days of GSM before anyone predicted the success of SMS. Networks have since evolved, and the legacy ‘store and forward’ SMSC-based architecture is no longer appropriate if operators are to maximise this opportunity. Telsis invented and developed the concept of Intelligent SMS Routing, now being adopted by leading mobile operators as the standard infrastructure for the next stage of SMS traffic and revenue growth. Contact Telsis to discuss more."
