A Critical Analysis Of Apple's IPhone

The Apple Iphone has a sleek outlook alright, but should we expect anything less from Apple? Well not exactly. Apple still has to fight two battles currently; The suit by Cisco for copyright infringement (which doesn’t concern me), and the lack of the most wanted features common on smart phones of today. Rather, Apple chose to stick to the basics of a normal PDA/phone combo; That means the iPhone includes features like WiFi, Bluetooth, a camera and “The Safari Browser”.

Apple's iPhoneWhat was Apple thinking? The market target for the Iphone, would already have Ipods, probably they would have to throw it into the gabbage bin or perhaps give it to some other person that doesn't have it already. Having an Ipod inside a phone is not just what would make it sell, but having more features rather, that other phones lack or are struggling to include in variety of their releases. What makes it an ipod phone, when it even lacks the basic WiFi sync to iTunes?

Apple Iphone simply lacks the simple features a smartphone should have; this includes its lack of a slot for expandable memory such as the MMC or the SD cards (perhaps the 8GB was just for the music), considering it is not extensible for third party developer applications.

The Apple Iphone does not even come with MS Exchange or Office support, I guess perhaps they thought they could boycott Microsoft applications yet again and create their own niche market.

Another potential problem I heard was that you only have about 5 hours of talk or video and 16 hours of audio (no mention of how much standby time you get). The battery life is relatively short and could be a potential problem, because that means you cannot surf, and download music and listen to music at the same time, except perhaps you have spare batteries to keep changing all the time.

Infinite Loops covers the limitations of the Apple Iphone extensively under the entry titled “iPhone is awesome (restrictions apply)“.

"The Apple iPhone is a good innovation and great gadget for the normal phone users. However, the power phone users who are used to PDAs may have to look further than the iPhone."

"Hi Kayode... I just read your article and followed the link you posted and... surprise, surprise... Why did you just copy the content of the article by Mary E. Tyler leaving bad comments on the iPhone? Could it be because you just don't like Apple? Maybe you should just reread the article you took the info from and see that Mary is actually talking good about the iPhone... (and by the way it's spelled iPhone not Iphone)"

"hi kayode your criticisms are valid, however the iphone is a revolution of the smart phone device.... not an aim to compete, but to innovatively reconstruct the convention. I think apple should be lauded for its bold departure from stylus-styled phones that have been a headache for consumers. with complementary products coming in the apple portfolio e-geeks should keep their fingers crossed cos its just begining..... Apple transformed the IT industry in 1984, and the music industry in 2001, now its the telecommunications industry in 2007 (and the traditional media with the apple tv). Nokia and Motorola better visit the drawing board cos apple just raised the bar once again. Its not how techie it is now, its how its going to transform the mobile communications platform."

"Kayode, The iPhone lacks a removable battery, so the option of carrying a spare batery is not even there. As cool and inspiring as the UI is, where users will run into problems is text-entry. Without a proper keypad or a stylus, speed of text entry with finger on the soft keyboard (and on that small screen) will be challenging. The iPhone is just an over-hyped novelty that does very little existing devices cannot do. @Darryl: Have you seen and handled the iPhone yourself?"

Inaccurate post

"First, the iPhone has a non-replaceable battery... so there'll be no battery swapping. That said, this product is not aimed at competing wiht existing smart phones. It is aimed at luring affluent users of 'normal' phones upward into a more expensive, more expansive product that fixes all of the user frustration typical in lesser handsets. It is Apple's gamble that a sufficiently large group of just normal phone users will pay substantially more for a "normal phone done right." Only time will tell is Apple has been prescient in their instincts or dumb. For one, I am among this group, hating the tiny buttons and arcane menus of curently available handsets, and with the money needed to step up to a wonderfully implemented alternative suchas the iPhone. Unfortunately, I require using my handset as an Internet modem over EDGE, a feature disabled in the iPhone. I'm still waiting for a great blank sheet design handset from elsewhere, and will not be buying Apple's product."

"So you've decided that the iPhone is a Smart Phone, only it doesn't have the features of a Smart Phone. Does that make sense? Maybe it's not a Smart Phone. Maybe it's sommething new."
