CDMA In Africa | CDMA - The Family: CDMAone, CDMA 2000 1x, and EV
Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), a cellular technology that competes with GSM technology for dominance in Africa and the rest of the world.
The term CDMA is widely used to refer to a family of specific implementations of CDMA pioneered by Qualcomm for use in digital cellular telephony. These include IS-95 (aka cdmaOne) and IS-2000 (aka CDMA2000). The two different uses of this term can be confusing.
cdmaOne is a brand name owned by Qualcomm that refers to the second generation CDMA standard whilst CDMA 2000 1x is essentially a third generation mobile technology and is backward-compatible with earlier versions.
History
Developed originally by Qualcomm and enhanced by Ericsson, CDMA is characterized by high capacity and small cell radius, employing spread-spectrum technology and a special coding scheme.
CDMA - The Family: CDMAone, CDMA 2000 1x, and EV
CDMA is the foundation for 3G services: the two dominant IMT-2000 standards CDMA2000 and WCDMA, are based on CDMA. Plus CDMA is the fastest growing wireless technology.
CDMAone
CDMAone describes a complete wireless system based on the TIA/EIA IS-95 CDMA standard, including IS-95A and IS-95B revisions. It represents the end-to-end wireless system and all the necessary specifications that govern its operation. cdmaOne provides a family of related services including cellular, PCS and fixed wireless (wireless local loop).
CDMA2000
CDMA2000 represents a family of ITU-approved, IMT-2000 standards and includes CDMA2000 1X and CDMA2000 1xEV technologies. They deliver increased network capacity to meet growing demand for wireless services and high-speed data services. CDMA2000 1X can double the voice capacity of cdmaOne networks and delivers peak packet data speeds of 144 kbps in wireless environments.
CDMA2000 1xEV
o CDMA2000 1xEV-DO delivers peak data speeds of 2.4Mbps and supports applications such as MP3 transfers and video conferencing.
o CDMA2000 1xEV-DV provides integrated voice and simultaneous high-speed packet data multimedia services at speeds of up to 3.09 Mbps.
o 1xEV-DO and 1xEV-DV are both backward compatible with CDMA2000 1X and cdmaOne.
In Africa, CDMA has witnessed deployment in Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda and recently South Africa. This is not all. There is more to come.
