Mobile Africa - Glossary

Data

Definition: The plural of the ancient Greek datum, data, in short is information. In the digital realm, data is stored and manipulated as numbers. A computer whether it is a PC or the small computer inside your mobile phone is little more than a machine for storing and manipulating (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing) numbers. With the replacement of most analog networks by digital networks over the last decade came the enhancement of the capacity of voice networks. The offshoot of this is that not only voice information could be transmitted digitally. With digital data technologies, text, pictures and video can also transmitted, thus your telephone line also serves as your gateway to the Internet, allowing you to view Web pages and send and receive e-mail. It is this convergence of data forms with wireless mobile technology that enables new mobile devices such as WAP-enabled phones to access Internet information anytime the user is within range of a base station
