Gateway
Definition: A method of interpreting differing protocols between disparate computer and/or telephone systems is often required. This conversation and interpretation can be performed on a gateway, which is a piece of hardware or software specifically designed to link two different types of network. The combining of the Internet with a mobile phone network, for example, requires specialized gateways. Another frequently used example is adding a gateway to an existing PBX system, so that all mobile calls can be routed through the gateway to take full advantage of mobile-to-mobile call charges, rather than paying the more expensive landline-to-mobile charges.
