Ghana's leading cellular network, Areeba, has lowered the price of its SIM card and has also haulted the free mobile Internet service it has been offering its subscribers.

Areeba has lowered the price of its SIM cards to 40,000 cedis for regular packs and 15,000 cedis for Installment packs. The installment pack was hitherto priced at 75,000 cedis. This marks a remarkable reduction in price from just a few years ago when an Areeba SIM (then known as Spacefon) pack went for 444,000 cedis.

Areeba Ghana has also halted the free mobile Internet access it has been offering its subscribers since November 2004, in a bid to start billing for the service. Last Monday, subscribers already enjoying the service received a text message from Areeba, reading:

"We hope you enjoyed Areeba's free period of GPRS. Please visit our offices starting Tuesday 21st March to know more about the service charges and reconnect".

The free WAP browsing has since then been disabled for mobiles.

Areeba is a GSM network operated by Scancom Ghana Limited.
