GPRS Now Available In All Glo Coverage Areas

Globacom has announced the extension of its General Radio Packet Services (GPRS) to virtually all its coverage areas in Nigeria.

A statement by its Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Mohammed Jameel, said the GPRS service is now available in all Glo coverage areas, making it possible for subscribers to the network to access the service in almost all the places covered by the company.

With Glo service now in almost all parts of the country, including all the state capitals and the FCT Abuja, it means our subscribers can access the GPRS service wherever they are in Nigeria. No other network comes close to us in GPRS coverage, Jameel stated.

GPRS, the 2.5G technology, is a platform which guarantees high speed data transmission and multimedia messaging services, among other benefits. With the launch of the technology by Globacom in August 2004, the Second National Operator became the first network to introduce it in Nigeria.

GPRS also enables the offering of value added services unavailable on the 2G technology deployed by most operators in the industry.

Some of the value added services available on the Glo GPRS technology are Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Glo Mobile Internet and Glo Direct.

With MMS, subscribers can send advanced text messages that include picture and sound.

Glo Mobile Internet provides the subscriber high speed access to all popular sites which have been customized for mobile phone browsing. The service enables Glo subscribers to access such sites and surf the internet directly from their mobile phones, provided such service has been activated and the mobile handset in use is WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) enabled.

Glo Direct is an advanced wireless internet access service that allows subscribers to connect their PDAs and smart phones to the World Wide Web. It also allows for users to connect their laptops to the World Wide Web using their GSM GPRS enabled phone.
