Glo Mobile announced in a press statement that the service would initially be available to its post-paid subscribers who travel to the UK, USA, France, Greece and Russia and will soon be launched in all major destinations including 87 other countries where Globacom has established facilities. Some of the countries are Italy, Spain, Holland, Switzerland, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Greece, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Denmark and Hungary. Other countries in the roaming agreement with Glo Mobile include Saudi Arabia, Syria, South Africa, Algeria, Cote dIvoire, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Uganda and Benin Republic. |
The Chief Operating Officer of Glo Gateway, Globacoms international gateway subsidiary, Charles Odiase, who announced the launch of the service stated that with GPRS Roaming, Glo subscribers can also access Glo Fleetmanager, a vehicle tracking service. In particular, the Glo Mobile Office service will come in handy for subscribers who roam during their overseas travels. With Glo Mobile Office, they can access their Microsoft exchange mail, appointments, calendar and tasks directly on their mobile phones.
Along with the GPRS-based services, other value added services such as M-Banking and Magic Plus are also available, said Odiase.
We have thus made it easy and convenient for our postpaid subscribers who travel abroad to surf the web for any business opportunities or access their e-mail accounts without looking for a phone line or internet caf, he declared.
On how subscribers can access the new service, Odiase explained that prospective users will require a GPRS-enabled handset alone or the handset and a laptop. They also require to have voice roaming activated on their postpaid SIM by calling the Customer Care department.
GPRS is a platform which guarantees high speed data transmission and multimedia messaging services, among other benefits. With the launch of the technology by Globacom in August 2004, the Second National Operator became the first operator to introduce it in Nigeria.
The introduction of GPRS Roaming service, the first such offer by any network in Nigeria, gives Glo subscribers access to services such as MMS and mobile internet when roaming outside the country.
MMS offers subscribers the opportunity to combine picture, sound and text in a single message, while Glo Mobile Internet gives subscribers access to customized internet sites on their mobile phones. Glo Direct, also available on the GPRS platform, enables subscribers to browse the world wide web from their laptops and other devices, using their GPRS-enabled device as the modem.
