Celtel Uganda Trials GPRS And EDGE

Celtel Uganda has commenced GPRS and EDGE mobile data technology services, which the company hopes will increase its subscriber base.
This is according to Martin Sebuliba, marketing manager for the company, who says the service is a trial, with the commercial launch due in the fourth quarter of 2006. The services are being tested by 1 000 users, to allow the company to address any technical issues.
Sebuliba says the market potential for GPRS and EDGE is huge, because of its ability to deliver high-capacity data with download speeds of up to 56KBps to 114KBps.
EDGE is an advanced format of GPRS, which has the ability to carry third-generation services of voice, data and video, says Sebuliba.
“As technology is advancing, people are definitely yearning for the services on offer.”
He says postpaid customers will be able to access a bundle of 10MB to 50MB of data per month, while prepaid customers will be able to access 10KB to 50KB per month.
The pan-African telecoms provider, with its roots in 14 countries with over 15 million subscribers, already offers the technology in Tanzania and Kenya, adds Sebuliba.
He believes Africa needs these services to unlock many of the stumbling blocks across the continent and accelerate development. “By creating a platform where people can access revolutionary information, they are equipped with the resources to make their lives better.”
