SMSpop, a service of MTN South Africa has finally been shut down.
SMSpop had earlier this year (January 2005) dispatched an email to all it's users, notifying them if the impending shut down which was then slated for March 31st, 2005.
In another email to its subscribers on 31st March, the SMSpop team wrote:
This is your last day to use up your pops before shut down at midnight GMT on 31 March!
Thanks to our loyal users who have supported us over the years and wish you well SMS’sing the world :)
Popwards!
The smspop team.
Thus came the end of a great service.
In an earlier enquiry to the SMSpop team earlier this year, MobileAfrica.net was informed that SMSpop was no longer profitable to the company, thus the need to shut down the service.
SMSpop was essentially a software that allowed subscibers to send text messages (SMS) to phones worldwide with connection agreement with MTN South Africa. Subscibers had to buy the credits, before they could send messages, though new subscribers were given 5 popsm (units) for free.
In addition, the SMSpop website, as at 5th April 2005, was disabled.
