Ghana's communications regulator, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has penalized Scancom Limited, operators of the Areeba GSM network in Ghana, with a fee of ¢2.8bn (about 304,347 US Dollars).
This is a new drive by the industry regulator to protect consumers from what it described as “demonstrable abuses from operators”.
In line with the new move, the NCA would soon introduce ‘number portability’, a system that would enable customers of a particular network to switch to another service provider which is providing better quality service without the usual difficulty of changing numbers. This was according to the Director of Licensing and Regulation, Mr Joshua Peprah who also added that the number portability system “involves some cost consideration when setting it up” and noted that this was essentially a long term solution.
According to the NCA's data for the first six months of the year, Kasapa Telecom, operators of Kasapa, ranked as the best service provider while Millicom Ghana Limited, operators of tiGo, came second, with Ghana Telecom's Onetouch coming third and Scancom's Areeba came last.
The rankings come at a time competition in the mobile phone sector has become more intense, with each operator struggling to gain a bigger market share.
