Celtel's Vmobile Trials 3G In Nigeria

Vmobile Nigeria is reported by a Nigerian daily newspaper (The Guardian), to be testing the ubiquitous 3G cellular technology (UMTS), over its network in three of Nigeria's major cities - Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.
3G will enable Vmobile to carry data, voice, broadband Internet and multimedia services on its network and the services to be offered include: Basic Voice Services, SMS (Short Message Services), Multi-Media Service (MMS), Video Telephony, Video Conference, E-mail, Web browsing, VOD (Video on Demand), NetMeeting, real time Mobile TV service, and Caller Ring Back Tone (CRBT) service.
Vmobile Nigeria chose Huawei along side Ericsson to run a 3G trial on their network.
According to The Guardian,
The 3G trial network implementation for Lagos, which commenced on June 5 was completed first on June 20, 2006 by Huawei. To meet the requirement of Celtel Nigeria in terms of speed of roll-out, quality and performance, Huawei set up a high level implementation team comprising of 3G experts who worked hard to ensure a desired output for the trial.
Celtel Nigeria plans to connect Lagos with Port Harcourt to enable 3G subscribers in Lagos call Port Harcourt so as to enjoy the abundant services from the 3G network Huawei Technologies Co, Ltd.

Vmobile is the first amongst GSM operators in Nigeria to upgrade thier network to support 3G. Some Private Telecom Operators (PTOs) who are utilizing CDMA technology already offer high-speed Internet access. According to the website of CDMA Development Group (CDG), Cell Communications Limited, Independent Telephone Network Ltd., Intercellular Nigeria Ltd., Multi-Links Telecommunications Ltd., Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (Nitel), Rainbownet Limited, Reliance Telecommunications Limited and Starcomms Limited are cellular networks in Nigeria that utilize CDMA2000 1X and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO both which are high-speed 3G technologies.
UMTS is popularly known as 3G and offers high-speed data/internet access over a mobile network that has been upgraded to support the technology. However, the acrnonym 3G means "third-generation" and refers to cellular networks that are capable of carry broadband Internet. Other 3G technologies include: CDMA2000 1X and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO.
Vmobile, the third largest GSM operator in Nigeria, was recently acquired by Celtel who bought a 65% stake in the Nigerian cellco.
