Mozambique state-owned mobile operator Mcel has received a UMTS 3G licence, according to the Mozambique News Agency (AIM).

The market's other mobile operator, Vodacome, has not been licensed to offer such services. Mcel chairperson Rui Fernandes said the 3G service would become available after the middle of 2007, for postpaid customers initially. Mcel, which is investing around USD 50 million in 2006, covers some 70 percent of the country at present, and aims to extend it to 90 percent by 2010. The company's over 1 million customers are mainly prepaid account holders.
