MTN South Africa significantly boosted its network traffic for the 2006 festive season with hefty capital investment in its network and the enhancement of capacity of base stations around South Africa.

MTN South AfricaFigures earlier this month by MTN SA indicate that SMS traffic jumped to 1.17 billion, a 49% improvement over last year. Voice traffic soared to 1.87 billion calls, up 46% over last year, endorsing MTN South Africa’s leadership position in the traditional voice market.

"Our big story is the phenomenal growth of MMS traffic," says Bernice Samuels, General Manager: MTN Brand and Corporate Affairs, MTN South Africa. MMS traffic grew 400% to 8.8 million over the 2006 festive season.

"The uptake of personalised, fun technologies indicates to us that customers are vying for our lifestyle and value-driven products and services. We were certainly glad to help our customers share special moments with friends and loved ones over the holidays. Watch for further technologies from MTN this year to enable you to get MORE," Samuels said.

MTN’s cellular network covers at least 96% of the South African population and is the only network with a national EDGE footprint.
