MTN Nigeria has lifted a temporary suspension placed on the free night calls benefit for the XtraCool subscribers during the Christmas and Muslim Sallah holidays in December 2006.
According to Bola Akingbade, MTN Chief Marketing and Customer Relations Officer, “The suspension was to enable seamless flow of traffic on the MTN network for the generality of our customers during the peak of the Yuletide season, as well as the Sallah holiday. Now, our XtraCool subscribers can continue to enjoy all the benefits associated with the package, including the free night calls.”
The XtraCool free night call benefit package enables its subscribers to enjoy four hours of free on—net calls (MTN- to- MTN) daily between 12.30am and 4.30am.
This benefit, which has proven (since its introduction in September 2006) to be a favourite among youth population. “It is not a reward for patronage nor a promotion, but an integral part of the MTN XtraCool offer,” Akingbade explained. In addition to the free night calls, customers on MTN XtraCool package also enjoy MTN to MTN SMS rates of N5; a 30 per cent discount on calls to friends and family member on the network, plus ultra low voice rates for calls made to other customers on the MTN network. “With the largest network size, subscribers on the XtraCool package can communicate with the largest community of friends at a pocket friendly price,” the CMC said.
“Indeed, MTN remains the first to offer free night calls, a product conceptualised to succour the lean pockets of youths who may want to reach out to acquaintances,” Akingbade said.
To enjoy the network’s free night call benefit, an MTN subscriber simply needs to migrate to the XtraCool package by sending an SMS with the number 711 to 131 and have a minimum of N100 credit balance. It is this simple and easy to access. No history of spend or achievement of a given threshold is required to make free night calls.
MTN Nigeria recently introduced the 0703 bundle after announcing it has crossed the 12 million subscribers base. Nigeria’s total telephony subscribers was recently put at over 30 million by the country’s regulatory agency, Nigeria Communications Commission, NCC explaining that further growth was even expected in 2007 and beyond.
