The first annual African Mobile Marketing and Advertising Summit takes place next month in Lagos, Nigeria. Mobile service providers, media owners and advertising agencies will meet next month to discuss strategies to harness the power of mobile advertising in Africa.

African Mobile Marketing & Advertising Summit 2008Instinct Media will host the first annual African Mobile Marketing and Advertising Summit on 21 May, in Lagos, Nigeria.

The conference aims to provide stakeholders with insight into opportunities in mobile advertising and marketing in Africa, as well as strategies to tap into them, says Instinct Media's group executive publisher, Akin Naphtal.

The conference will discuss how emerging market operators, Internet service providers, media companies and brand owners can tap into this market potential, he says.

Research reports estimate the mobile advertising market will grow from $255 million in Europe and the US, to almost $2 billion by 2011.

Growth in non-voice services in Africa, coupled with a recent surge of activity in mobile search services, strongly suggests mobile advertising is finally about to take off, Naphtal notes.

Content and speakers

According to the conference programme, scheduled speakers from the mobile industry include Claxithus Okoruwa, xlr8 Nigeria CEO; Rick Joubert, executive head of mobile advertising at Vodacom SA; Samson Isa, iTouch Nigeria; Harry Trisos, mobile marketing consultant at Mobility SA; and Mark Kaheru, marketing and communications manager of Uganda Telecom.

Speakers in the advertising sphere include Richard Dale, engagement planning director from Leo Burnett; Adrian Toy of McCann Erikson; and Joshua Maa, founder of Madhouse China.

Speakers will share campaign strategies and tools to reach customers and build brand awareness through mobile marketing, says Naphtal. They will also share case studies of mobile marketing campaigns.
