Celtel International, the pan-African mobile communications group with over four million managed customers in 13 countries, has launched pre-paid roaming in the Democratic Republic of and Republic of Congo.
Celtel is one of the first operators in Africa to set up pre-paid roaming so that customers can ‘top-up’ their accounts in the neighbouring country without pre-arranging the roaming service from their home country and ‘roam’ using the same number. This is a unique service in West Africa and is aimed at improving communications for the thousands of Congolese who travel between the two neighbouring countries on a daily basis. Commenting on the launch of the service Martin Dirks, Managing Director of Congo (DRC) said: “We are proud to be launching this ‘virtual connection’ for the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo. The proximity of the capital cities of these two countries means that thousands of people travel from one country to the other every day, crossing the Congo River. Celtel’s roaming service will make calls between the two countries easier for people on the move. Pre-paid customers can keep the same number and ‘top-up’ their accounts in a few easy steps, no matter which country they are in and at a very reasonable cost. This is all part of our brand promise: ‘making life better’.” Marten Pieters, Group Chief Executive, said: “This demonstrates Celtel’s leadership in cross border technology in Africa and is further progression in terms of a pan-African service. Pre-paid roaming with no customer pre-activation from a home network is offered by major international operators and makes the customer experience truly seamless across numerous networks. We chose to launch Celtel’s pre-paid roaming service in the Congo where cross-border travel is extremely high.”
