Determined to take what it describes as its rightful place in the Global System for Mobile Telecommunications (GSM) market in Nigeria, Mtel has rolled out plans to reactivate its brand through a unique, four-city marketing drive dubbed the Mtel Orange Train.

Mtel, revamped and re-invigorated under a new management, will commence the promotion at the Eagle Square, Abuja, on Thursday (May 5) through the Stratosphere, the most modern event platform in the world. Thereafter, the marketing train will berth in Lagos, Kano and Enugu.

The stratosphere, an inflatable dome with dimensions of 70ft tall by 130 foot wide, is designed as a projection medium capable of holding up to 300 people. The focal point of the Orange Train, it is a unique high quality inflatable venue with the ability to show high definition video and laser imagery. It was the platform for the re-launch of Hong Kong harbour and the famous London Eye.

The Orange Train promotion, powered by handset maker Nokia, is billed to feature games, musical talent hunt to pick the Voice of Mtel, lots of gifts for participants and sale of Mtel SIM packs.

Its principal objectives are to grow revenues and customer base, build an renewed corporate and consumer brand and raise its overall value in preparation for government’s privatisation plan.

Established as the mobile telephone arm of NITEL, Mtel was re-established as a separate company in 2003. The company woke up from an initial slumber last year, initiating marketing drives that increased its subscriber base from 90,000 to 700,000 and now has slightly over a million subscribers.

Acting chief executive officer of Mtel, Mr. Edwin Moore Momife, says the Orange Train “will enable all stakeholders look, taste and feel the new Mtel and our various offerings as well as our GPRS platform and other consumer initiatives.”

Mtel’s products include Share The Talk, which uniquely enables subscribers to share credit online and Power Talk, which is the lowest denomination recharge voucher at N250.

Mtel’s N400 recharge voucher is a made in Nigeria recharge voucher with which it abides with the Federal Government’s policy guideline to the GSM firms.
