Kasapa is one of the four cellular operators in Ghana. The Managing Director of Kasapa, Mr Robert Palitz, yesterday announced the company's intention to spread its operations nationwide when it changes from the analogue to a digital system by August this year.
A contract to supply, build and manage a digital network for KASAPA was signed in China last week between KASAPA and ZTE of China to provide affordable voice and data telecommunications solutions for mobile, home and business activities. First shipment of network equipment is due to arrive in Ghana this week while construction starts immediately.
Briefing Journalists in Accra on Tuesday, Mr Palitz said KASAPA would deploy the CDMA 2000 IX, a third generation family of cellular technologies developed in the US and used by more than 256 million customers in 78 countries. He explained that the Company would shut down its analogue system, but pledged not to leave any of its active customers behind in the forward march to present day technology.
Mr Palitz noted that KASAPA had taken this while to come out with the digital facility because, "we did not want to make promises to our customers and Ghanaians when we did not actually have a product for them". All active customers using dual mode handsets would switch automatically on to CDMA on the launching of the new network. The handsets would spot new features and much improved battery life.
Mr Palitz said active KASAPA customers would be able to exchange their functioning analogue handsets for new CDMA models of similar type with or without chips, adding that they could also have trade-in discounts on new models. Mrs Jane Zhao, Managing Director of ZTE, said the company was excited to be operating in Ghana, giving the assurance that "we are confident we can build our first network project in Ghana and link up the entire country on the wings of KASAPA".
ZTE Corporation is China's largest listed telecommunications equipment provider offering customized network solutions for telecom operators worldwide. ZTE currently operates in India, Israel, Thailand, Paraguay, Sri Lanka, Ghana and hopes to add Vietnam by the end of 2005.
