The Minister of Communications, Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo has commended the management of the Nigerian Mobile Telecommunications Limited (Mtel) for the positive steps being taken to reposition the company for competitiveness and profitability.

Chief Adebayo made the remark on Tuesday, June 2, 2005 at the VIP Nite hosted by the management of Mtel inside the Stratosphere – the magnificent hitech- customer service -centre deployed for Mtel’s National Brand Activation Programme (The Orange Train).

Speaking to a gathering of dignitaries at the event, which took place at the multi-purpose Millennium Park in Asokoro District, Abuja, the Minster enjoined all stakeholders to “join the Orange Train of Mtel as it seeks to deliver improved services at full value for money to all subscribers”.

While noting that Mtel is the only one of the GSM firms that is wholly managed by Nigerians, he said “I am particularly gratified at the efforts by the current management to revamp Mtel”.

Chief Adebayo said that the Technical Board was collaborating with the management of Mtel to ensure that the policy direction and strategic thrust of government’s intervention is achieved.

According to him, the overall objective of government was to ensure that Mtel becomes a case study in the successful transition from government to private ownership, yielding real value for the people and government of Nigeria.

He expressed gratitude to the banks and other financial institutions who have now bought into the vision of Mtel by providing the much needed funding for the company.

In his welcome address, the CEO of Mtel, Edwin Moore Momife regaled the guests with the change initiative sweeping through Mtel. “Mtel has embraced change. We have embraced progress. Orange Train is our platform for reaching out to the rapidly increasing number of subscribers on our network,” he enthused.

Momife informed his audience that the Orange Train programme kicked off from Abuja on May 4th, 2005. It subsequently travelled to Lagos, Enugu and Kano in that order before finally stopping in Abuja for the VIP Nite.

He described the Orange Train as the most ambitious brand campaign ever undertaken by Mtel and one of the best by any major firm in Nigeria. According to him, the message of the Orange Train is that the turnaround at Mtel is on course.

The Management team, under the direction of the Minister of Communications and the Bureau of Public Enterprises, has a clear vision of the envisaged state of the company at the point of sale during its planned privatisation and we are working towards it.

Specifically, he noted that the focus of the team was on: Network improvement, optimisation and expansion, organisation renewal, revenue and customer growth as well as corporate reputation and perception change.

It was a night of splendid display of conviviality as men and women of high standing in the society backslapped and shared humour, savouring the goodies of the evening.

The Chairman House Committee on Communications, Honourable Yemi Arokodare, Postmaster General of the Federation, Alhaji Abubakar Musa Argungu, Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission, Alhaji Ahmed Joda, Director General, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Mrs. Irene Chigbue and CEO NITEL, Mr. Albert Mashi also attended the night.

Other dignitaries present at the night were members of the House of Representatives, ministers or their representatives, bank chiefs, diplomatic officials, Mtel suppliers and vendors, as well as some management of NITEL and Mtel and their staff. Officials of Ericsson, ZTE, Motorola, Huwaei and Nokia also attended the event.

The celebration of the evening was flagged off by the popular choral group, Menche Sings with their sonorous rendition.
