A new domain suffix is in the make that is targetted at web sites that are to be viewed on mobile phones, only. The domain suffix is .mobi and is made possible as a result of an effort by a consortium of companies including Microsoft and Vodafone, who have been ngotiating with ICANN for this to be possible.
The consortium of mobile phone and internet companies hope to persuade people to use their phones to surf the web with this new effort.
The 11-member consortium was yesterday given the right to give out .mobi domain addresses to businesses that want to provide internet content for mobile phones. Websites that would feature such addressed should start appeating from early next year.
The consortium is known as mTLD Top Level Domain Ltd and consists of Hutchison 3, the GSM Association, Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, Samsung, Syniverse Technologies, TIM, Telefónica Móviles, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
Hitherto, mobile phone users had been confused with which websites could be displayed on a mobile or not.
With the new .mobi addresses, web sites using this addresses are expected to be cut-down versions that have been built specifically for mobile devices and would display well on small screens.
