Nigeria's premier mobile phone operator, MTel Nigeria recently announced its intention to upgrade its 2.5G network to 3G in the next few months.

The operator’s ambitious plan also includes expanding its subscriber base from the present 1.2 million to 6 million, as it adds an extra 1,500 base stations to its infrastructure.

In another development, the MTN Group announced early in July, its plan to upgrade its network to 3G in 2006. MTN operates in Nigeria as MTN Nigeria.

3G is currently available in Nigeria in the form of CDMA 2000 1x by some of the Private Telecom Opearators (PTO) in Nigeria.

The GSM networks (MTN, Mtel, Glo Mobile & VMobile) are expected to upgrade to UMTS (3G) as they all gear up to provide Africa's most populous nation with mobile telecom services.
