One of Ghana's cellular phone network operators, Kasapa Telecom has switched on its CDMA network on Sunday night, thereby winding-up its old AMPS analogue network for good.
This launch makes Kasapa the first cellular network to roll out the much marketed CDMA technology in Ghana.
Kasapa Telecom, a subsidiary of Hutchison Telecom, signed a contract with ZTE Corporation in July 2005 who has been responsible for constructing the nationwide digital network based on CDMA2000 1x technology.
CDMA would allow Kasapa to offer advanced value-added-services that had hitherto not been possible on the old AMPS network.
According to the MD of Kasapa, Mr Robert Palitz, the company has only just soft launched the CDMA network and would take a few weeks to make sure existing customers are well taken care of, and that all the little bugs on the network are resolved. After this, new features would be introduced and announced.
Though the high capacity and efficiency of CDMA allows data and Internet traffic to be carried over the network, Kasapa has chosen to maintain a focus on wide coverage area and low voice prices. This, according to Mr Palitz, "more clearly addresses the unmet needs in Ghana, though it's not interesting to gadget fans. We will consider partnering with people and companies who wish to offer advanced services on our network."
The CDMA network would be formally launched after the settling-in period.
Kasapa currently has 75,000 subscribers, of which 45,000 have been recently active. Indications are that most customers' phones switched over from analog to digital without difficulties.
Kasapa is one cellco that prides itself in offering the cheapest call tariffs of Ghana's four cellular operators. It also currently offers free phone calls terminated within its network weekdays from 10pm to 6am and all day Sundays.
