VMobile Nigeria Rises Up To Competition In GPRS Arena

Nigerian cellco VMobile, has since the previous week opened up its GPRS offering to prepaid subscribers. Their hardly advertised GPRS had hitherto been limited to post-paid subscribers under the brand names: Vactive and VOffice.
Although VMobile Nigeria has not made any official announcement to this effect, the settings for the service appears to have leaked. Some VMobile subscribers have confirmed being able to use WAP over GPRS on their mobile phones.
This is possible when a subscriber sends the code 'wapgrps' to 184. The settings for GPRS are immediately sent to the subscriber via SMS.
VMobile also has a WAP site at the URL: http://wap.vmobile4me.com
VMobile Nigeria has increasingly been coming under stiff competition following the launch of their rival, MTN Nigeria's GPRS since the end of August this year. Glo Mobile rolled out a GPRS-enabled network form day one while the last GSM operator, MTel Nigeria launched GPRS for its postpaid subscribers in April this year. Details about MTel's GPRS are sketchy.
As at time of writing however, VMobile has deactivated the service, perhaps as a result of the fact that the settings for the service had leaked before an official announcement.
Nigeria is widely seen as a very potential market for mobile communications and other related technologies due to it relatively high population and low Internet and telephone penetration. The west African nation that has a population of over 130 million has about 14 million phones in total with the GSM sub-sector making up the bulk of the figure.
