Ghanaian Minister of Communications, Mr. Albert Kan-Dapaah, on Friday officially launched Kasapa's new digital mobile phone network that was recently upgraded from analogue.
The CDMA network which has been under beta testing for some time, now allows Kasapa's subscribers to send text messages, and use chips, though the chips are not compatible with GSM handsets.
In a statement attributed to Mr Robert Palitz, Managing Director of Kasapa Telecom, he said the development is in fulfillment of the company's promise to costumers in June this year that it would go digital and improve its services.
He stated that before the end of this year, Kasapa is expected to be operating in seven regions of Ghana and in all the ten Regions before June next year. "Kasapa is not the kind of company that will make grandiose promises and then disappear into the bush for a year with no explanation", he added.
He said that the Kasapa chips are free and that customers only need to buy CDMA phones that use chips from authorized Kasapa dealers.
"We focus on keeping prices down and extending coverage", the Managing Director stated. He thanked the National Communications Authority and the Ministry of Communications for their patience with, assistance to and confidence in the company.
In the words of the Minister of Communications, Mr. Albert Kan-Dapaah, "Kasapa has made a remarkable story in the telecommunication sector." He challenged the Management of Kasapa to get new targets to ensure the expansion of the company.
The CDMA 2000 1X, which is the backbone of KASAPA’s new digital network was procured from ZTE Corporation, China’s largest listed telecommunications equipment provider, belongs to the third generation family of cellular technologies developed in the US and used by more than 256 million customers in 78 countries.
