Vmobile Nigeria's Free WAP & MMS

Information reaching Mobile Africa indicates that Vmobile Nigeria might stop offering its WAP and MMS for free, from the 31st of January 2006.

Though VMobile Nigeria's website has been silent about their WAP & MMS offerings, Mobile Africa can confirm that the service has been available for free to its prepaid subscribers since the fourth quarter of this year. The only indication that VMobile Nigeria was GPRS-enabled has been its annoucement of Voffice as a new bouquet of value-added services from Vmobile, comprising Vlink, Vmail, and VMail plus and Vfax. This bouquet affords its users the ability to send and receive data via the Internet in a faster and more dependable way. With the Voffice Suite and a CSD/GPRS-compatible device: mobile phone, PDA, PC, or laptop, enables its subscribers to enjoy: |
- Network Connectivity Solutions – mobile connectivity to the internet and the corporate intranet/LAN.
- Enterprise email – SMS-to-email; Email-to-SMS solutions.
- Personal Information Management – synchronization of personal information (Calendar, Tasks, and Contacts) between the office computer and the mobile handset
- Fax Services – Mobile Fax Solutions
Currently, prepaid subscribers can use their GPRS mobile phones to access WAP sites. The WAP service is activated by sending "wapgprs" to 184 while MMS is activated by sending "mmsgprs" to 184
The Over-the-air (OTA) setup is then sent to the subscribers mobile.
Glo Mobile trailed the blazed with GPRS when it launched its 2.5G network. Currently, all the GSM networks in Nigeria are GPRS-enabled. Mtel and MTN have announced their intention to upgrade to 3G (UMTS/WCDMA), next year.
